Tawk of New Yawk is about giving a real voice to the people who actually make this city what it is—indie artists, writers, restaurant owners, historians, performers, and the characters you only meet if you’re paying attention. Founded by a New York City writer and educator, Tawk moves away from polished lists and predictable coverage and instead leans into conversations, stories, and perspectives that feel lived-in and specific. Through interviews, essays, and cultural pieces, we spotlight the people behind the scenes and in the mix—the ones shaping New York in real time. This is a space for honest storytelling, distinct voices, and the kind of cultural energy you don’t find unless you’re part of it.

New York Culture from the Inside. The people, rooms, and stories shaping new York in real time.

TAWK OF NEW YAWK IS COMMITTED TO ACCURACY AND TRANSPARENCY. IF WE PUBLISH AN ERROR, WE CORRECT IT PROMPTLY AND NOTE THE CHANGE. OUR REPORTING IS INDEPENDENT, AND CONTRIBUTORS DISCLOSE ANY POTENTIAL CONFLICTS OF INTEREST RELATED TO THEIR WORK.

the crew

The Tawk of New Yawk crew is made up of the leasT serious writers imaginable.

Stephanie A.

founder & Editor

Loves a good story and is almost always in the middle of writing one. Drinks coffee like it’s harmless (it’s not), thrives on having too much on her plate, and would happily spend all her time learning if the world would just let her.

Scott Brooks

broadway outsider, Columnist

Scott keeps an ever-evolving list of unpopular opinions, just in case anyone asks. If he sees a book he hasn’t read, he reads it—everything except “romantasy,” which can fuck right off. He’s a novelist and playwright, currently serializing his novel The Gist on Substack (because he can’t get published—he was, unfortunately, born a boy). The theatre, that terrible mistress, seduced him young and has been spurning him ever since. He keeps coming back anyway, with several new plays in development at any given time. Left to his own devices, he’ll still order a burger and a beer for dinner. Raising two children has not made him a morning person, nor has it led to any discernible maturity. He’s one of those Bruce Springsteen fans who will go on and on, so don’t get him started. He’d rather be in New York City than anywhere else on Earth.

Dislikes: magicians, beets, and parts of Queens.

JEN GLASS

Nightlife, Columnist (Substack); Literature, Culture Writer

I’m Jen Glass, a media researcher by day and a writer by night. I love dancing in four inch heels, endlessly cataloging the restaurants I try, and being better than you at Sudoku. I may travel as much as I can, but I always come back to New York, the greatest city in the world.

EMILE LACHENY

THEATER CONTRIBUTOR

Emile Aslan Lacheny is a French-Turkish author, actor, and director from Paris. He developed a love for storytelling at an early age and taught himself English by watching movies and television. He earned his BFA from St. Edward’s University before moving to New York, where he graduated from the Stella Adler Studio of Acting. Emile has appeared in several Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway productions and starred in short films featured at the Chelsea Film Festival. He toured Turkey as The Phantom of the Opera, has won awards for his writing, sold his first screenplay, and has had all six of his plays produced in New York City. In his free time, he is passionate about consuming all forms of art—especially Doctor Who and DC Comics (he really loves those).

emma baxter

emma’s set list, columnist Resident Stand-Up Comedian

Emma Quinlan Baxter is a writer, comedian, and card-carrying Lifetime Girl Scout. Growing up in Jersey, she remained in love with New Yawk since the day she was (technically) born in it, so she moved back for college and lived happily ever after. Emma performs standup around the city and writes scripts of all sorts, putting her minor in Comedy (and sometimes even her other one in Irish Studies) to good use. Her humble beginnings as a dorky theatre kid/amateur teen playwright led her to the glamorous world of film & TV, then down the dark path of sketch, improv, storytelling, and other vices. Now she finds herself here, making weird wordy jokes about New Yawk history & culture—her literal dream job.

alina gatrell

ART & CULTURE WRITEr, THEATER CONTRIBUTOR

Alina Gatrell is an absurdist-romantic humanist with a surprisingly rational streak. She is drawn to beauty, spectacle, social ritual, and the strange little systems people build to survive modern life. When she is not writing, she is usually cooking, traveling, noticing wildflowers, side-eyeing historical inaccuracies, or admiring something beautifully made with a fizzy drink in hand. Most days you can find her hunched over in the park trying to get a close-up shot of a mushroom, or wearing big bright earrings and playing a video game.

Lydia "Dia" Griffiths, Phd.

Bygone HISTORY, EDITOR & Columnist

Lydia Griffiths is a mythologist and staff writer covering history, or what we call it when humanity does the same thing over and over again with slightly different outfits. Her work connects ancient myth to modern culture, tracing the stories we refuse to stop telling.

DAVID LANSON

SALMAGUNDI, WRITER; THEATER CONTRIBUTOR

David is an actor and performer who, on occasion, is fortunate to find himself jotting down a thought or two for Tawk of New Yawk. Originally from Arizona, he brings a love of New York City, his home now for two decades, along with its local culture and politics to Tawk.

DAN MARINO

BITE ME, NYC, WRITER; BYGONE HISTORY, WRITER; ART & CULTURE, WRITER

Dan is a writer with a passion for storytelling! Growing up in South Jersey, he moved to New York to work in the film industry and although the Philly sports allegiance is still strong (not sorry!), he's come to love all things New York. He's excited to join the Tawk Team and explore some of his favorite topics like film, history, and food!

sarah wadsley

Theater Contributor; Bygone History Contributor; Bite Me, NYC Contributor

Sarah is a book worm, animal lover, and the friendly neighbor you wish you had. Her work has been published in Aphra Magazine, Forty South, Poems by Young Australians, and occasionally on social media before it was ready. A true-blue theatre kid and history nerd, Sarah’s ceaseless love for learning perhaps adds to her anxiety that she’ll never be truly good at anything, but she enjoys having an outlet for her many sides, plus finding likeminded souls who find that they, too, often need to vent on the subway. Sarah can usually be found befriending the nearest dog, cat, or pigeon.
