Nicole Travolta Is Doing Meh.

Back in New York to reprise her show Nicole Travolta Is Doing Alright, this one-woman, barely stand-up, story-driven piece centers on a young woman’s shopping addiction and her resulting mountain of debt.

While Travolta may have gotten by without riding Uncle Johnny’s coattails (allegedly), it seems she surely gets to coast on her looks. That’s the only justification I can find for how this piece has run for so long, seen so many stages, and is still this bad. Her stagecraft was awful: she kept forgetting lines, the pacing and flow were all over the place, and while we all love a redemption arc, the show, her overall demeanor, and the few interactions with audience members all felt forced.

How did this secure a five-week run in New York City while better pieces and performers never see the light of day? While I did feel sorry for her predicament, and how stressful it must have been, I didn’t believe the young woman had learned much at all by the end. Perhaps don’t cry poor while flaunting your filler, fake nails, and boob job.

The best bits were her smattering of celebrity impressions, and while there were a couple of laughs, her storytelling left much to be desired. Perhaps she was having an off performance.

She said you’re more than welcome to hate-watch it, but my vote? Skip it.
